Melissa Vieira-Greene

Melissa Vieira-Greene was raised in a close-knit Guyanese household, in Guyana and later Brooklyn, where work, faith, and service were part of daily life. “Our home was a place where people came for guidance, and I saw early on that leadership starts with responsibility for others. Brooklyn reinforced that lesson in a different way; it demanded independence, discipline, and resilience.”

Twenty-one years in the U.S. Air Force convinced Vieira-Greene that the qualities necessary for effective leadership often did not come naturally to those tasked with being leaders. “I served in both operations and human resources roles, focusing on workforce management, personnel operations, and leadership support. I deployed four times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting missions where organization and clear decision-making mattered. I was injured in the line of duty and later retired as a Wounded Warrior. That experience reinforced for me how leadership decisions affect the people carrying out the mission.”

Following her military service, Vieira-Greene spent two years as the Guyana-based administration leader for International SOS. She is currently the CEO of Human Resources Warrior LLC. Vieira-Greene has made leadership her focus, helping individuals, especially first-generation professionals and women, build confidence, clarity, and accountability in their careers. Organizational safety, performance, and workforce development flow from better leadership, structure, systems, and operational discipline, she says.

“Throughout my career, the decisions I have been responsible for making often involve legal, financial, and ethical considerations simultaneously. I chose the NYU Law-Wagner Master of Science in Health Law and Strategy because it brings these areas together in reflecting real-world leadership. Through the curriculum, the faculty, and the diverse experiences of the cohort, the program provides a clear understanding of how law, policy, finance, and strategy shape real decisions. It has strengthened my approach to evaluating decisions and operational challenges, enabling me to take a broader view that includes legal, financial, and ethical considerations. This is especially important in environments where safety, compliance, and accountability are critical.”

Vieira-Greene takes special pride in blazing a trail for others with similar backgrounds. “I am on track to become the first Guyanese graduate of MSHLS. I see this as more than a personal achievement. It creates visibility for others from Guyana, the Caribbean, and Latin America to see themselves in global academic and leadership spaces.”
