Dr. Kevin Tin
Partner , Newtown Gastroenterology
Class of 2025
Like many idealistic med students and young physicians, Dr. Kevin Tin set out for a career in medicine with relatively little knowledge of the complexities of the industry. “I didn’t think to realize that there is so much more in the healthcare ecosystem than just being a physician. After opening up my own practice and being involved with some digital health startups, I realized how important it is to understand the foundation of laws and regulations.” He says the decision to pursue the MS in Health Law and Strategy at NYU was “a no-brainer.”
Dr. Tin, a partner at Newtown Gastroenterology in New York City, has pursued graduate education to remedy his initial naivete. “As a partner, I am involved daily with the administration. There are many facets in healthcare that we don’t learn during residency or fellowship. These can range from human resources, marketing, innovation, adhering to policy and regulations within the healthcare system, and handling the intricacies of each payor from each insurance company.”
Keeping up with the evolving complexity of the U.S. healthcare system virtually demands a program like the NYU Law – NYU Wagner Master of Science in Health Law and Strategy, Dr. Tin says. “We have been diving deep into the state of the current healthcare system in the United States and how much of the national GDP goes into healthcare without the clinical outcomes that you would expect to go with it. We are also seeing a shift to value-based medicine to help mediate costs and how this would affect practices. This definitely helps me as a specialist understand more about what insurance companies are contemplating, as this transitions to the primary care doctors and then to us. With this, I am even more focused on making sure our patients are screened for colorectal cancer and creating educational materials for colorectal cancer awareness. Being able to combine what I do at work and then making sense of each policy and regulation and the history of how things came to be really enhances my knowledge and understanding of the U.S. healthcare system.
“The faculty are truly amazing. They are knowledgeable, experienced, and very approachable. They all have had previous roles in the healthcare system, and being able to gain their insights has been tremendous. The curriculum is also very aligned to what I do, so everything is relatable, and being able to take the knowledge and apply it to my work has been extremely valuable. My cohort is also fantastic—we have such a diverse group of individuals in all areas of the healthcare ecosystem and to be able to listen and hear from them has really given me an understanding of all the stakeholders involved. Another big strength is the administrative staff. The program is so well-organized and well-run.”
